also i dont know if this helps but a hint is this puzzle is like a key. Like all keys, it has left the faintest trace of itself on the lock please help me solve this!

I think we're missing something here to give us a clue what we're talking about here. Maybe a picture? Where the puzzle appeared? Presentation form of the text? Sounds like an old puzzle in GAMES Magazine.
