Math problems...?

what is an easy way to fnally understand algebra? It seems that I always get Cs, Ds, or Fs on math quizes or tests. My over all grade ranges from an A to a low B or high C. But other than math, I'm a straight A student.I would really love to be able to hold down a steady good grade in Math, and on tests. Any ideas? I don't have test anxiety or anything, I just don't "click" with math...

Math problems...?
Hello

I'm a math teacher in Michigan and I've seen many students struggle with algebra and the whole concept of X, Y, and letters instead of numbers.

One way that I found to help students understand the concept is thinking of the problem with a small box instead of the letters. Sounds funny, I know, but lets try it. If you have a problem like 3X+2=8 you need to figure out what X stands for. Replace the X with a box of marbles, so you have 3 times "a box" +2 =8. Now, how many marbles could be inside that box? If it's one marble you would have 3 times 1 +2 which is 3+2=5 5 is not 8 so we have to try again. How about two marbles in side the box? 3 times 2 is 6 +2=8. Yeah!!! The answer is X=2

Give it a try.
Reply:ONE WAY OF DOING ALGEBRA IS TO THINK OF THE LETTERS AS NUMBERS INSTEAD OF UNKNOWN LETTERS. LIKE 1 + 2 = 3

OR IF A = 1 AND B = 2 THEN C = 3 THEN WE HAVE A + B = C Report It

Reply:SO IF YOU KNOW WHAT A = AND YOU KNOW WHAT B = THEN YOU WILL KNOW WHAT A + B = WHICH IS 3. DO ANY COMBINATION OF THIS. YOU ALSO MUST KNOW ALL THE RULES AND HOW TO APPLY THEM AND WHY THEY WORK THAT WAY. OTHER WISE THE PRINCIPLE BEHIND THE Report It

Reply:RULES.STUDY, STUDY. STUDY. THAT IS THE REAL ANSWER.

SO YOU KNOW STUDY + STUDY = GOOD MARKS ON YOUR TEST. PRACTISE, PRACTISE ,PRACTISE. ALSO = GOOD MARKS ON YOUR TEST.

REMEMBER TO REPEAT OVER AND OVER AND OVER WHAT YOU HAVE TO LEARN SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO REPEAT YOUR GRADE.

It will walk you through understanding algebra.
Reply:I heard from some movie/tv show that if you have a problem with Math, there was a gap in your math learning somewhere. Given that your grades in other subjects are pretty high, I think you just need some extra effort and you will totally get this. Algebra is one part of math that you would probably use some other time in your life - in my opinion, you better get this down since you're going to use this more than Trigonometry or Calculus or whatever. Algebra is all about reading word problems really well and getting the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division rules down. Just keep determined and you will get this!
Reply:come into class before school and ask you algebra teacher for some help! :) I also know that you can go to heaven if you get saved and the way that you get saved is if you believe that Jesus died on the cross from your sins, rose on the third day, and then you have to confess to God in prayer that you are a sinner and that you believe He died on the cross for your sins and ask for His forgiveness on your sins and it is THAT simple, salvation is a free gift, we can't earn it. I am a baptist who believes (let me rephrase that, I KNOW) that this stuff I said is true. My name is Matthew James Needham and don't be shy to contact me on this. my email address is im_proud2b_a_christian@yahoo.com
Reply:It's all about practice. I'm not much of a math person, either. I dropped my first college algebra course. But now, I love algebra! It's really simple. Find someone who can explain it to you. I had a tutor the second time I took algebra, and she taught me to love it.
Reply:Try to study with letters instead of numbers. Understanding the theory helps understand the exercises. If that doesn't help..then do as many problems as you can
Reply:Think of math as learning to play piano. In just a few minutes, I could teach you how to play piano. Seriously. I could teach you the relationship between pitch and position on keyboard, and teach you the basics of written music. But could you play piano in five minutes? HELL NO!

You have to practice math exercises everyday to get any good at it, just like you have to practice piano exercises every day. Just memorizing one or two songs might sound good, but when someone tests you on your piano skills, you will flunk on everything except those two songs.

Look around for books of math practice and exercises. Skip around instead of doing ONLY that kind of problems your teacher is concentrating on at the moment. You CAN develop math skills, and this will help you with ALL your problem solving skills. But the key is PRACTICE every day.
Reply:Mr. H has a very interesting way of looking at it. I definitly agree. Kudos to Mr.H
Reply:USE A CALCULATOR! DUH!
Reply:the easier way to understand algebra is to asked the teacher for helped before school or after school. also its takes practice to get the problem right now. also another to helped you is to try out some problems in the math book or the worksheet. or the easier way is to asked your parents for guidance.
